Affectionately known by all who know him as Griz (and currently performing under that pseudonym), Chris Grunwald is a Philadelphia born artist who has been delivering the goods for more than a decade. Constantly adding to his creative resume, he continues to explore different musical avenues both as a solo performer and with several Philly based bands. Griz’ rustic exterior is embedded with thou...ghtful honesty and raw affection. His repertoire is a unique collection of songs crafted with an untamed scrutiny of the human experience that leaves an audience energized and ready to dance. This rocking vibe sets Chris apart from his mates in the local folk scene.
Griz, the band, is the fleshed out manifestation of Chris Grunwald's songwriting. Accompanied by a rotating cast of accomplished musicians, Griz brings to life the rock and roll sounds that Chris hears in his head (along with the voices).

Kyle McGill

Saturday, March 31st 12:45pm

New Jersey singer/songwriter Kyle McGill is on a mission to enlighten the mind and body of anyone willing to listen. Music has always been an important structural part of Kyle's life, and he has a vision of bringing that importance into the lives of his listeners.

Keeping an open, willing mind when writing songs, he takes inspiration from many genres and philosophies, and thus has developed his own unique style. McGill has an uncanny ability of taking a thought or idea from his head and truly turning it into something personal, yet universal. You won't find preachy, "in-your-face" simple-meaning lyrics, but key words juxtaposed with others that actually create his message... one with a maturity that belies the age of this young musician. McGill's first record, the recently released Embrace has been recorded at Milkboy Studios and produced by Milkboy's very own Tim Sonnefeld. Tim and Kyle established an essential bond when producing this record and the collaboration has lifted Kyle's music to its full potential. As well, Kyle had the privilege of working with some of Philadelphia's best musicians and engineers, including Devin Greenwood. Kyle has played at some of Philadelphia's best clubs and venues such as - The Tin Angel, Northstar Bar, World Cafe Live, The Havana and has also been featured on Radio 104.5.

MUSCLE SHOALS REVIVAL

Friday, March 30th 7:15pm

Muscle Shoals Revival is the kind of rock n roll music that makes you want to get up and dance, let loose with 6-10 drinks and hopefully take some chances that you may, or may not regret. Their original compositions contain strong lyrics that come from the heart, driven by soul & life experiences that will give you goose bumps and get the blood pumping through your veins! Muscle Shoals Revival’s music is heavily influenced by the rootsy, Americana rock and soul that was recorded in the sixties and seventies at the Alabama studio with the same name. Their cover material includes classics and obscurities from The Rolling Stones, The Band, and The Grateful Dead, as well as a healthy dose of soul and blues, including James Brown, Muddy Waters, and Bill Withers.

New Sweden

Saturday, March 31st 1:45pm

New Sweden has been sharing their unique flavor of Americana, Folk, and Indie Rock with the greater Philadelphia region since forming in late 2009. The 5-piece outfit molds their sound using a blend of traditional folk instruments (viola, banjo, acoustic guitar, mandolin, pump organ, bass, percussion) with a modern twist and energetic live performance.  The lyrics are sincere, complex, and powerful; sure to speak to any listener willing to lend an ear.

2011 has been a great year for New Sweden; the recording and release of their first studio record, “The Mountain” (Recording Engineer Nick DiDia, Producer Ritchie Rubini) stands out as an exciting milestone and huge success to date, but not to be overlooked were:  sharing the stage with the likes of The Felice Brothers, Kevin Devine, James McMurty, and all artists at the 2011 WXPN NON-COMM Convention, radio appearances on Philadelphia’s WXPN and Wilmington’s WSDW, competing with local Philadelphia artists and ultimately winning the Beta-Hi-Fi Emerging Artist Competition, and a whole slew of other shows along the away.

In less than two years as a group, New Sweden has built a strong, loyal fan base in the Philadelphia/Wilmington region through a relentless live performance and undeniable connection with all types of audiences.  Support for the band has been evident with over 1,000 albums sold independently,  packing the World Cafe Live’s Queen Theater to capacity for “The Mountain” record release party, and consistent growth of followers through Facebook, Twitter, and
newswedenmusic.com.

So what’s in store for 2012?   New Sweden will continue to support their new release, “The Mountain” through East Coast U.S. tours, local performances, and radio appearances.  A new batch of songs is already in the works and recording of an LP will likely take place early in the year.  Also, keep an eye out for new online video content, raw New Sweden-produced home studio recordings, and a live concert album.

Nicos Gun

Friday, March 30th 9:30pm

Nicos Gun didn't start out as a band at all. Harry Zelnick (drummer), Barney Cortez (singer/guitar player), and Nick Bockrath (guitarist/keyboardist) initially met to produce "a track that Lil Wayne would want to use". Having won a Grammy for work that he did with Ludacris when he was just 17 ("War With God"), Zelnick has worked with everyone from Kelly Clarkson to 50 Cent. "Harry is trained to just crank beats out. We started to write fast and combine every type of music we like from the Velvet Underground to Lil B. Next thing we know we had over 40 songs."

"A big part of it, too, is that we want to bring people into our world," says Zelnick. "We want to show people how we live in Philly. Making a video is as fun as making a new song. And especially just to be able to write a song, make a video, put it on the net, and have people respond to it is awesome. Friends will tell friends who will tell friends and you can gain a fan one at a time. We like writing songs, we like getting them to people, and we like playing live. It's a pretty simplistic idea."

Stellar Corpses

Friday, March 30th 8:30pm

Stellar Corpses hail from Santa Cruz and have become a fixture in its hard rock music scene. This is no overnight success story. Stellar Corpses met in high school and have been around, playing shitty clubs, building their fan base and doing whatever it takes to be able to create and perform music as their lifelong careers, if they get their fondest wish. They’ve got the goods…now it’s time to get out there and prove it to a bigger audience.

“I grew up in a good home,” says Dusty. “My dad played guitar and sang at church and I always wanted to be like him. I'm not religious, but I do belong to the church of Rock and Roll! I think in metaphors, which makes it easy to write good songs that people can relate to and find their own meanings in. I don't write in a literal way, like about politics or daily mundane stuff. I write mostly about love and death, our biggest motivators and mysteries! My favorite thing in the world is a live rock concert. There's nothing like a big group of people singing the same song and rocking out together.

Life for Dusty was not always rosy. After his family split up he was left alone in Santa Cruz where he spent years drinking, fighting, playing in bands and experimenting with drugs. "I partied hard and ended up in jail on 12 different occasions." Dusty recalls, "Music was always my passion, but I knew I was headed nowhere. So I wised up and decided to go to school, where I earned a Bachelors Degree in psychology and an Associates in music." During this time, Dusty started Stellar Corpses (an astronomy term he learned in college) with his good friend Dan Lamothe. Dan, Emilio and Kyle managed to keep themselves out of jail, although they’re certainly not what you’d call angels either...they know very well there’s a time and a place for everything, and the music always comes first!

Stellar Corpses’ songs cover all sorts of subjects: “The title track, ‘Dead Stars Drive-In,’ is about the dark side of Hollywood and how some of its brightest stars, like Elvis, Marilyn, Bela Lugosi and Vampira eventually burned out. But to this day, their lights shine as bright as ever, and we will go on loving them always,” Dusty explains. Emilio reveals, "’Teenage Witchcraft’ is about being different…it’s simple, really. ’One More Day’ is about living your last day on earth to the fullest with no regrets and no apologies. ‘So Long Goodbye’ is a parallel of death and the end of a relationship.” “’Vampire Kiss’ is a nod to our hometown Santa Cruz, where the movie The Lost Boys was filmed. Its a powerful sing along that would frighten any glittery vampire out there,” Dan quips.

The band’s live show is dynamic and interactive with the fans. Emilio says, “We are like human buzz-saws live, we tear through our set with raw energy. I'd say get ready to sing with us, most of our songs are very anthem like and require the crowd to sing along. Its my favorite part, when the crowd actually knows the song and is singing along in my face…its the best payoff ever.”

Stellar Corpses literally live and breath music, music and more music. Says Dusty. “Music is everything to me. It's my lifeblood. I need to hear it, learn it, write it, record it and perform it live, or I will surely die. I've had so many different jobs and I couldn't stand any of them. Music is the one passion that has kept me completely enthralled non stop every day since I got my first guitar. Society tells you to get a job, but people on their deathbeds always say to follow your heart. We follow our hearts no matter what.”

Strawberry Jam

Saturday, March 31st 7:45pm

Strawberry Jam is an indie rock band based in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  Sara Salermo established the band after yearning for a fuller, more wholesome sound. She developed Strawberry Jam with the help of guitarist Richard Andrew. The band was finally complete when they acquired stylish drummer Henry Salermo and multitalented bassist Adrian Amador. Since the birth of Strawberry Jam in May 2009, they have managed to take the local music scene by storm; with the support of nearly 2,000 faithful “Strawbabies.”

The band has been compared to artists such as Regina Spektor, Amy Winehouse, Kings of Leon, Adele, and No Doubt. They combine elements from their greatest influences to create a unique medley of sound unmatched by any other.

Strawberry Jam is currently working on releasing their first EP entitled “Be Nice; I’m Fragile”. The band recently released their latest single, “Queen of Hearts,” which has already garnered the attention of many, such as New York radio host Rich Russo. They are also planning to tour the East Coast this upcoming summer of 2012.

This is not just a band comprised of four people with an immense passion for what they do. Strawberry Jam is a breath of fresh air in today's music scene and a bright streak of originality in a monochromatic industry.

Turf War

Saturday, March 31st 3:15pm

Turf War started in 2008 as a bedroom solo project for lead singer John Robinson and quickly turned into a full band with Brian McGrath filling in on drums and backup vocals, Cecil Moss on Guitar, and Bradley Morris on bass. They created a sound reminiscent of early Replacements and brought on a full party attitude to their live sets.

After playing the club circuit in Augusta for 3 years and gaining a wide audience they set their dreams higher and made the move to Atlanta, GA. It didn’t take long for people in Atlanta to start recognizing the bands energy and catchy songs. They even caught the attention of fellow Atlanta rocker Ian St Pé of the Black Lips, who came on to produce the bands first full length. In the process of recording the album they met Ian McDonald, who was engineering their record.

John quickly saw a likeness in Ian musically and asked him to join Turf War, making them a five piece. The band headed out to Texas on their first run outside of GA in 2011 to play SXSW, looking for a label to put out their record and hoping to find a wider audience. They decided to make a partnership to release the self titled debut of Turf War Years of Living Dangerously, set to street on October 18, 2011. Turf War plans to tour this fall in support of their debut album.
